Today is the day! From today, Friday 9 October 2026, everyone on board recreational craft 6 metres or less must wear an appropriately sized lifejacket while the craft is underway—anywhere in New Zealand! This includes small boats, kayaks, paddleboards and jet skis. Underway includes drifting, so even with the engine off, the rule applies unless the craft is anchored, aground or tied to the shore or a dock. The Maritime Transport (Lifejackets on Recreational Craft) Amendment Act 2026 comes into force today, bringing this nationwide requirement into effect. As we head towards summer, make a correctly fitted lifejacket part of every family adventure on the water. Lifejackets save lives. Wear yours and help spread the word!
